Rockford Wildcats Youth Running Club

The Wildcats is a Youth Cross Country Team that started running in 1997. The program is designed to let kids have fun while learning about running. The ages of our runners range from 5-18. The program is open to all who might be interested in running. We compete in a series of cross-country meets during the fall, beginning in early October. The Wildcats host a meet on October 29, 2011, which is open to all youth runners. The Wildcats are a part of the Rockford Road Runners, a Road Runners Club of America organization member club. Rockford Wildcats are also affiliated with AAU and USA Track and Field.

There is no cost to join, this makes it easy for children ( and parents ) to give the sport of running a try. And while there is no cost to join there are nominal race and meet fees should a child decide to participate in an event that we are using either as a goal or in our fall series of cross country meets.

We also encourage parents to participate by in running with one of our groups and assisting our coaches in taking the children out on runs. We have other ways that non-running parents can assist as well.

For those bringing very young children, (5, 6, 7) bring your walking shoes we often find that very young children are not ready to start running even for the short distances that we take them. We are very careful with the young children as we never ever want to give them any reason to dislike running. So we do ask that parents just walk behind they need not keep up but at least are there in case a child decides they really would rather not be out running. We have found and seen over the years a number of 5 & 6 year olds who were not ready but were back and running regularly as 7 & 8 year olds.
